A joint team of military and police personnel has begun demolishing structures at La Pleasure Beach in Accra, prompting strong opposition from the La Dadekotopon MP, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah.
A joint team of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and Ghana Police Service has commenced the demolition of structures at La Pleasure Beach in Accra.
The exercise began in the early hours of Friday, October 2, 2026, with personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment directing workers, residents and operators to vacate the area.
Several structures have reportedly been completely or partially demolished, while affected workers and residents were seen salvaging their belongings from the rubble.
The exercise has triggered strong opposition from La Dadekotopon MP Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, who confronted security personnel at the site.
The MP said she had engaged government authorities and was assured that structures around the Labadi Beach Hotel area would not be demolished. She questioned why the exercise was proceeding without adequate notice.
The demolition is linked to an ongoing dispute over ownership of the land on which several businesses at the beach operate. Sowah said she was later informed that the land belonged to the Labadi Beach Hotel, but questioned the circumstances surrounding the demolition.
The development follows earlier demolition exercises by the 48 Engineer Regiment in the La-Laboma coastal area, where authorities said structures were obstructing waterways and contributing to flooding.
The latest exercise has, however, raised separate concerns over land ownership and ongoing legal proceedings, with affected operators and residents calling for clarity from the authorities.
