A school shooting in Banga town, South Cotabato, in the southern Philippines, left two students dead and eight others injured on Friday, according to provincial officials.

The suspected gunman, a 16-year-old student, also died after turning the weapon on himself. The victims were students aged between 14 and 17, while four of those injured were reported to be in critical condition.

Banga Mayor Albert Palencia said the suspect allegedly told friends before the attack that he planned to carry out the shooting after lunch. He later opened fire on students before taking his own life.

The incident comes amid growing concern over a series of deadly school shootings in the Philippines. Last month, a student reportedly livestreamed the shooting of another student in a classroom in Zamboanga before taking his own life.

In June, at least three students were killed and about 20 others injured after two classmates opened fire at a public high school in Tacloban.

Although the Philippines has relatively strict regulations on gun ownership, including background checks and psychological evaluations, illegal firearms remain a concern.

South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo urged gun owners to store firearms responsibly and ensure minors cannot access them. He also called for cooperation among parents, schools and authorities to improve student safety.

The Friday shooting remains under investigation as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
