US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, to the White House on Thursday for a high-profile state dinner.

The meeting brought together the leaders of the world’s two largest economies at a time of continuing tensions over trade, Taiwan, artificial intelligence, technology exports and international security.

During the dinner, Xi called for China and the United States to act as responsible major powers and urged a “new approach” to relations between the two countries. He said their discussions had produced a common understanding on several issues and provided new strategic guidance for bilateral relations.

Trump, meanwhile, highlighted his relationship with Xi, saying the two leaders had “never gotten along better.” He presented Xi with a statue of a bald eagle and later invited guests to tour the site of the new White House ballroom under construction.

Earlier in the day, Trump said the two countries had made “tremendous strides” on issues facing both nations. Xi said China hoped its companies would be treated fairly in the United States.

The leaders also discussed Taiwan, with Xi urging Washington to oppose Taiwanese independence, according to a Chinese government readout. The White House had not immediately released its own detailed account of the bilateral discussion.

The dinner was attended by several prominent technology executives, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

Xi also called for regular communication between the two militaries to help prevent crises and said competition between China and the United States should remain healthy.

Despite the diplomatic ceremony and positive public remarks, major differences remain between Washington and Beijing, particularly over trade, Taiwan, advanced technology and relations with Iran.
