At least 11 people have been killed after gunmen opened fire on a group inside a house in KwaMakhutha township near Durban, South Africa.
At least 11 people have been killed in a mass shooting at a residential house in KwaMakhutha township near Durban, South Africa, police say.
Police said three gunmen entered the house late Tuesday and opened fire on 14 people who were reportedly attending a gathering. Ten victims died at the scene, while four others were taken to hospital. One of those injured later died.
The victims included 13 men and one woman, who police said was believed to be pregnant. The woman was among those killed.
Authorities said some of the victims were reportedly under police watch in connection with illegal activities, but officials declined to provide further details, saying this could affect the investigation.
Police have not confirmed a motive but said they were investigating the possibility of a feud between rival groups.
A vehicle belonging to one of the victims was reportedly set on fire before the gunmen fled the scene, according to local media reports.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects as investigations continue.
The shooting adds to concerns over violent crime in South Africa, which has one of the world's highest murder rates. Police statistics indicate that more than 60 people are killed each day on average.
Authorities have also been dealing with violence linked to criminal gangs, drug trafficking, illegal mining and territorial disputes.
In February, President Cyril Ramaphosa described organised crime as a major threat to South Africa and announced plans for the military to support police efforts against criminal networks.
