The Ghana Football Association and Carlos Queiroz have mutually agreed to terminate his contract as Black Stars head coach following Ghana’s back-to-back defeats in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Carlos Queiroz have mutually agreed to terminate the Portuguese coach’s contract as head coach of the Black Stars.
The decision was announced on Thursday, October 1, 2026, following discussions between the two parties. The GFA said the decision was reached in a spirit of mutual respect and in the interests of Ghanaian football.
Queiroz’s departure comes after Ghana suffered consecutive defeats in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches. The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia, leaving Ghana without a point from their opening two Group C matches.
In his farewell statement, Queiroz said the decision was not easy but that both sides agreed ending their professional relationship was the most appropriate course under the circumstances.

He thanked the GFA, his technical staff, the players and Ghanaian supporters, while urging fans to continue supporting the Black Stars.
“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them,” Queiroz said, expressing confidence in the talent within the squad.
The GFA also thanked Queiroz for his commitment and professionalism during his time with the national team and said it would announce the next technical arrangements for the Black Stars in due course.
Queiroz had been reappointed in September after initially taking charge of Ghana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He now leaves the position less than a month into his renewed mandate.
